{"id":10434,"date":"2022-03-28T22:31:26","date_gmt":"2022-03-28T20:31:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tyr\/miloamerge\/?p=10434"},"modified":"2024-09-25T16:28:04","modified_gmt":"2024-09-25T14:28:04","slug":"lemon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/miloa.eu\/en\/glossary\/plants\/lemon\/","title":{"rendered":"<span class=\"lemon\">Lemon<\/span>"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>PROPERTIES<\/h2>\n<ul style=\"color: #d61163;\">\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #d61163;\">Anti-bacterial effect:<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lemon essential oil is a powerful anti-bacterial agent against many bacteria including: <em>Bacillus cereus<\/em>, <em>Listeria monocytogenes<\/em>, <em>Escherichia coli<\/em>, <em>Proteus vulgaris<\/em>, <em>Staphylococcus aureus<\/em>, <em>Bacillus subtilis<\/em>, <em>Salmonella typhimurium<\/em>, <em>Pseudomonas fluorescens<\/em> <span class=\"prod_ref\">(DOSOKY &amp; al., 2018\u202f; KLIMEK-SZCZYKUTOWICZ, 2020)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>A study conducted in 2017 showed that it inhibits the development of <em>Listeria monocytogenes<\/em> in beef. The obtained zones of inhibition of bacteria, such as <em>Listeria monocytogenes<\/em>, <em>Bacillus cereus<\/em>, <em>Staphylococcus aureus<\/em> and <em>Salmonella enteritidis<\/em> vary between 13 and 26 mm with lemon essential oil, while those obtained with gentamicin for the same bacteria are between 12 and 25 mm <span class=\"prod_ref\">(HSOUNA &amp; al., 2017)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"color: #d61163;\">\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #d61163;\">Anti-inflammatory effect:<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lemon essential oil reduces the expression of the pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-\u03b1, IL-1\u03b2 and IL-6. The citral it contains also inhibits the activation of NF-kB and the expression of COX-2 <span class=\"prod_ref\">(PUCCI &amp; al., 2020\u202f; KLIMEK-SZCZYKUTOWICZ, 2020)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"color: #d61163;\">\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #d61163;\">Antioxidant effect:<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The \u03b1-pinene and \u03b2-pinene contained in lemon essential oil exert an antioxidant effect by reducing the production of nitric oxide <span class=\"prod_ref\">(PUCCI &amp; al., 2020\u202f; BAIK &amp; al., 2008)<\/span>. Lemon essential oil induces an increase in the GSH \/ GSSG ratio, attesting an antioxidant effect <span class=\"prod_ref\">(PUCCI &amp; al., 2020)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>In a 2010 study on mice, its administration increased the activity of superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase, secreted in the hippocampus <span class=\"prod_ref\">(LOPES CAMP\u00caLO &amp; al., 2010)<\/span>. It also inhibits lipid peroxidation by stopping the chain of reactions by inactivating peroxide radicals <span class=\"prod_ref\">(AMMAD &amp; al., 2018)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"color: #d61163;\">\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #d61163;\">Anti fungal effect:<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lemon essential oil has an anti-fungal activity by inhibiting the formation of mycelium <span class=\"prod_ref\">(GUCWA &#038; al., 2018)<\/span>. It is particularly active against <em>Aspergillus niger<\/em>, <em>Aspergillus flavus<\/em>, <em>Candida parapsilosis<\/em>, <em>Saccharomyces cerevisiae<\/em> <span class=\"prod_ref\">(KLIMEK-SZCZYKUTOWICZ, 2020\u202f; HSOUNA &#038; al., 2017)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The limonene it contains inhibits the growth of <em>Candida Albicans<\/em> by causing damage to the cell membrane which causes apoptosis of fungal cells <span class=\"prod_ref\">(GUCWA &amp; al., 2018\u202f; THAKRE &amp; al., 2018)<\/span>. It also exerts antifungal activity <em>in vitro<\/em> against fungi affecting grapevine wood <span class=\"prod_ref\">(AMMAD &amp; al., 2018)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"color: #d61163;\">\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #d61163;\">Anti parasitic effect:<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lemon essential oil is an effective repellant against the malaria vector: <em>Anopheles stephensi<\/em> <span class=\"prod_ref\">(DOSOKY &amp; al., 2018)<\/span>. It has also shown a remarkable effect against <em>Sarcoptes Scabei var. cuniculi<\/em>, <em>in vivo<\/em> and <em>in vitro<\/em>. Indeed, the application of lemon essential oil on the affected parts once a week for four weeks, allowed the total cure of the affected rabbits after two weeks of treatment <span class=\"prod_ref\">(DOSOKY &amp; al., 2018\u202f; KLIMEK-SZCZYKUTOWICZ, 2020)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mil_bold\">As you have understood, lemon and health are linked for millenniums and not just to fight against scurvy during sea crossings.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CITRUS LIMON<br \/>\nLemon is a citrus fruit from the lemon tree, a shrub belonging to the <em>Rutaceae<\/em> family.
