{"id":10450,"date":"2022-03-28T22:38:39","date_gmt":"2022-03-28T20:38:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tyr\/miloamerge\/?p=10450"},"modified":"2024-09-25T16:27:39","modified_gmt":"2024-09-25T14:27:39","slug":"german-chamomile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/miloa.eu\/en\/glossary\/plants\/german-chamomile\/","title":{"rendered":"<span class=\"german-chamomile\">German Chamomile<\/span>"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>CHARACTERISTICS<\/h2>\n<p>It contains various chemical components including sesquiterpene alcohol, spirononene dicycloethers, sesquiterpene lactones, flavonoids, coumarins, mucilage, inulin-like fructan and rhamnogalacturonan.<\/p>\n<p>The essential oil (0.3 &#8211; 1.5% of the dry head) concentrates different molecules: chamazulene, sesquiterpene lactone of guaianolide type, purple red chamavioline and pathulenol.<\/p>\n<h2>PROPERTIES<\/h2>\n<ul style=\"color: #d61163;\">\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #d61163;\">Beneficial effects on the gastrointestinal tract:<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A meta-analysis involving 273 patients and combining three placebo-controlled studies demonstrated the effectiveness of a preparation of nine herbs including German Chamomile in relieving symptoms of dyspepsia such as abdominal pain or heartburn. The preparation is safe for therapeutic use <span class=\"prod_ref\">(MELZER &amp; al., 2004)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>In rats, this preparation has a dose-dependent anti-ulcerogenic effect associated with reduced acid and leukotriene production, increased mucin secretion and increased prostaglandin E2 release <span class=\"prod_ref\">(KHAYYAL &amp; al.,2001\u202f; 2006)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>German Chamomile reduces the overgrowth of <em>Helicobacter pylori<\/em>, a bacterium that causes gastric ulcers <span class=\"prod_ref\">(SHIKOV &amp; al., 2008)<\/span>. In addition, it inhibits the formation of gastric lesions induced by indomethacin and ethanol in rats <span class=\"prod_ref\">(CEMEK &amp; al., 2010\u202f; EL SOUDA &amp; al., 2015)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>It significantly protects in a dose-dependent manner against diarrhea and oxidative stress caused by castor oil in rats <span class=\"prod_ref\">(SEBAI &amp; al., 2014)<\/span>. It also reduces the symptoms of diarrhea in children treated in combination with different plants <span class=\"prod_ref\">(DE LA MOTTE &amp; al., 1997\u202f; WEIZMAN &amp; al., 1993)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"color: #d61163;\">\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #d61163;\">Anti-inflammatory properties:<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>German Chamomile has anti-inflammatory properties. It restricts the release of prostaglandin E2 induced by LPS. It inhibits the expression and enzymatic activity of COX-2 cyclooxygenase without affecting the expression of COX-1 in macrophages <em>in vitro<\/em> <span class=\"prod_ref\">(SRIVASTAVA &amp; al., 2009)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Two studies have shown the therapeutic efficacy of a cream containing 2% German Chamomile in reducing inflammatory symptoms in patients with atopic eczema on the hands, forearms and lower legs. This efficacy is similar to that of the cream containing 0.25% hydrocortisone <span class=\"prod_ref\">(AERTGEERTS &amp; al., 1985\u202f; RATZELT-WENCZLER &amp; PONCE-P\u00d6SCHL, 2000)<\/span>. It also improves wound healing <span class=\"prod_ref\">(MCKAY &amp; al., 2006)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"color: #d61163;\">\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #d61163;\">Antioxidant properties:<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>German Chamomile extract exhibits antioxidant activity and reduces the production of chemically active species. In addition, it decreases lipid peroxidation through various mechanisms <span class=\"prod_ref\">(MIRAJ &amp; ALESAEIDI, 2016\u202f; QUERIO &amp; al., 2018)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"color: #d61163;\">\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #d61163;\">Spasmolytic and analgesic properties:<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>German Chamomile exhibits a spasmolytic effect by inhibiting cAMP-phosphodiesterase <span class=\"prod_ref\">(MASCHI &amp; al., 2008)<\/span>. In addition, it has analgesic effects in acute and chronic pain in rats and mice <span class=\"prod_ref\">(KESMATI &amp; al., 2007\u202f; GANJALI &amp; al., 2012\u202f; NAUMAN &amp; al., 2012)<\/span>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MATRICARIA RECUTITA or CHAMOMILLA RECUTITA<br \/>\nMatricaria Chamomile or German Chamomile is an annual plant measuring a few centimeters up to 1 meter.
