It includes 700 hectares of tropical rainforest saved by an English naturalist, John Denham, in 1989, at the last minute, from fierce deforestation in view of banana cultivation. This reserve is a private haven of peace, and is 6 km long, all of wild beach. It is a crucial point of global biodiversity. It contains just over 2,500 species of plants and animals in their natural habitat including the jaguar, the Agami heron, the sloth, the leatherback, green and hawksbill turtles which come to lay their eggs in complete safety on its beach.
It is a model of conservation and preservation of wild life. It is part of the EPI (Ecology Project International), an organization for the protection, study and education of natural environments, which also includes the Yellowstone Park in the USA.
The Pacuare Reserve raises awareness among the local population about the protection and respect of their environment through visits to schools and teachers. It also trains researchers and young people from around the world by involving them in its scientific research.
Miloa financially supports this reserve so that it can pursue its activities. We will present its work and news to you on a regular basis.
