Omega-3 fatty acids are a group of essential polyunsaturated fatty acids. They are essential because they are required for the body to function properly, but cannot be synthesised by the body. This means that they must be supplied in the diet.
Omega-3 fatty acids have a number of vital functions in the immune system, inflammation, reproduction, growth, skin and coat health, the heart, kidneys, joints etc. They are needed from foetal development right through to the ageing process in older animals.
Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are precursors of a group of mediators of inflammation and immunity, the eicosanoids. Omega-3 fatty acids are anti-inflammatory, and omega 6 pro-inflammatory. The chain of production for omega-6 fatty acids uses the same enzymes as that for omega-3. Consequently, there is competition for these enzymes between omega-3 and omega-6.
In both dogs and cats, the ideal ratio is considered to be five times as much omega-6 as omega-3. In practice, in the case of both humans with a Western diet and pets with kibble, their plates and bowls are often very imbalanced and contain far too much omega-6 (commonly 15/1 or even 20/1!). This promotes a pro-inflammatory state and increases the risk of certain diseases.
With some diseases (renal or cardiac), the recommended ratio is 1/1, i.e. the same amount of both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.
EPA and DHA are essential for skin, heart, kidney, joint, liver, brain and immune functions. EPA and DHA are essential components of all cell membranes. They are involved in the mechanisms of inflammation by reducing proinflammatory mediators.
